Fi

The silent lake spread out around Fi and Briar like a pool of gleaming black ink. The night sky was dark, the stars muted by a layer of clouds. They sat face-to-face in a small rowboat on the great lake at the center of Everlynd. Briar pulled the oars into the boat, leaving the little craft to drift, turning gentle circles in the water. Fi lowered her hand over the side, dragging her fingers to make ripples across the surface. The cold water made her shiver. Lanterns glowed along the shore, a glimmering halo of lights that danced in the mirror of the water.

Her eyes fixed on the brightest glow: the lantern in Perrin’s hand as he stood at the end of the dock, growing smaller and smaller.

Fi looked down at the glass bauble in her lap. It was the heart of a small hourglass, barely the length of her palm. The golden sand inside shimmered as she tipped it back and forth. Their second day in Everlynd had gone by in a whirl, and though the Paper Witch and Perrin had explained the dream journey several times, Fi still felt like she had no idea what to expect when she broke the stem of the hourglass and plunged them into the dream.
